Can fishing be sustainable? And if so, how?, with team Frisch Gefischt

13 October 2020 @ 18:00 - 19:00

Hardly any other area of the food system is as contradictory as fishing. The fact that even in Hamburg it is hardly possible to get fish directly from the German coast is only one of the symptoms of an extremely intransparent trade sector. A large part of the catch ends up at auctions in the Netherlands or Denmark, only to be transported back to Germany afterwards. At the same time, decades of overfishing and subsidies for industrial fishing have dramatically reduced our fish stocks. This endangers especially small fishermen, coastal communities and natural habitats.

As a response to this, Lars Bäumer and Andreas Reinhardt founded Frisch Gefischt in Spring 2019. They deliver freshly caught fish from artisanal coastal fishermen directly to Hamburg’s restaurant kitchens, and are committed to securing a historically grown craft through fair payment and personal relationships.

As part of our Symposium, we will talk with Lars and Andreas on October 13th about the current situation of German coastal fishing, and the access and supply structure of regional fish. Can fishing be sustainable? If so, how? If not, why are we doing it it?
